The Galerian complex forms one of the monumental cores of ancient Thessaloniki, whose discovery in Navarinou Square, on Dimitriou Gounari and the surrounding streets also determined the layout of this area of the modern city.

During the 20th century, when the rebuilding of Thessaloniki’s historic center resulted in the burial and disappearance of most of the ancient city’s building remains, the exploitation of Navarinou Square for building purposes was blocked by the ruins of the Galerian complex, which in some sections remained preserved to an impressive height. Thus, the chance to highlight a very important part of the city’s now-lost monumental wealth arose.

Μonuments and building remains of the Galerian Complex and wider area. Based on : Urban map of Thessaloniki 2000.
